The evidence base

A century of salt therapy research

Halotherapy traces back to the 1800s in Eastern Europe, when physicians noticed that salt miners rarely suffered the respiratory and skin complaints common elsewhere in their communities.

Doctors began prescribing time in the salt mines, and dedicated therapy areas were eventually carved out underground. Later, equipment was built to recreate that microclimate above ground - and modern halotherapy was born. Halotherapy Solutions’ equipment was designed in Estonia, one of the original homes of this early practice.

Because of this history, much of the published research has come out of Eastern Europe, with growing attention in the United States, Australia and beyond. The studies below are a curated cross-section, grouped by area of interest - a starting point rather than a complete library.
